Unfinished Journals

http://www.elephanthouse.biz/index.html http://vimeo.com/25807062 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eagle_and_Child It remains to be documented how the greatest of writers collect their thoughts. While I was in Edinburgh, Scotland I walked past the "Elephant House" where J.K. Rowling scripted the early books in the Harry Potter series- busy and not as "quaint" as I imagined...in Oxford, the opposite incidence occurred after a half pint in C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien's "Eagle and Child" small English pub most famously known for housing discussions that prompted many of Lewis and Tolkien's most famous works. I am delighted to be traveling to New Zealand to view Hobbitland this December and continue to remain in awe at the occupation of writing as if I, too, could someday admit that it would be a marvelous way to spend the day indeed. I like to believe that Jack Kerouac's "Dharma Bums" had it right- thoughts and books stored in s...

"Vinyasa: A Toast to the Beautiful"

Image
They call Vinyasa Yoga the "Flow" yoga...an alignment of both movement and breath: an almost pairing of the soul, if you will. It is through this practice over the last two weeks that I have come to know more about what I crave and love about this beautiful life (Nanikeola) and the honor of a more shifted awareness- "free breathing with sound". I crave the transition between...everything. The un-pose. The sound between the breath...the pause in exhale               inhale. The space between where nothing is supposed to exist and yet our minds transition...our bodies move...and WE exist. The sound within the music...underneath each note..The invisible beautiful. I crave moving through the wormhole and summoning a breath that is still learning to appear. The movement becoming absolutely mindless...the breath controlling...and yet releases...journeying through the asanas (poses), as ...

Child 31- The Story of Mary's Meals

Image
From the Creators of "Human Experience", Grass Roots Films Presents "Child 31": "The immediate hope is surviving."  "It could have been any one of us..."      "Mary's Meals is an international movement that sets up school feeding projects in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education. Mary's Meals is a simple idea that works - by providing a daily meal in a place of education, chronically poor children are attracted to the classroom where they can gain a basic education that provides an escape route from poverty. Over 800,000 children receive Mary's Meals every school day. The average cost to feed a child for a whole school year is £10.70 / €12.40 / $16.80." See website: http://whoischild31.com/

"The Vegan's 100 Food List"

Image
I just finished the documentary "Vegucated" (2010) this morning (see: http://www.getvegucated.com/ ), and have decided to start exploring veganism for the next 7 days. I found a food list to start from a website that does not seem to be particularly research-based, but sets the pace as far as its counterparts are concerned. As much as I have loved learning about nutrition in the last few years the, "Animal Liberation Front", is an entirely different ball game. Let's see what we can find. As copied from: http://kblog.lunchboxbunch.com/2009/09/vegans-hundred-100-foods-you-should-try.html ..... The Vegan's Hundred Here’s what I want you to do: 1) Copy this list into your blog or social networking site profile, including these instructions. 2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten. 3) Cross out or italicize any items that you would never consider eating. 4) Optional extra: Post a comment on this post linking to your results. The HHL Vegan Hundred: 1. Molas...

Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 Hour Rule

Image
In his book, Outliers , Malcom Gladwell references a study by Anders Ericsson (see link below) to support his thesis on people who work toward success and greatness in their lives. Throughout his research, Gladwell found that the most prominent crossover relating these peoples' success was 10,000 hours of time spent in "deliberate practice and coaching" within their field of study. Sometimes I feel as though this time spent perfecting our craft separates us from those who are not. On the other hand, I have to believe that this calm before the storm or the preparation before the fight in the expert in all of us does allow an "Outlying" vantage point in which we are able to more aptly contribute to societal gaps. We are living somewhere between 1 and 10,000 hours... Last week I came across a similar idea in a TED talk by Jane McGonigal, founder of Gameful whose secret mission is to change the world through gaming (se...
